Overview:
The hilly state of Meghalaya in the North-eastern part of India gets its name from Sanskrit, meaning ‘the abode of clouds.’ Other than its serene beauty comprised of hills, valleys, lakes, and waterfalls, the state also has numerous other mesmerizing locations, such as its picturesque capitol hill-station, Shillong; the well-known city of Cherrapunji; the cosmopolitan city of Guwahati; the beautiful village of Mawsynram; the wildlife sanctuary of Pobitora and many more.
Day to Day Travel Slate:
Day 1:
You will be taken to your hotel for check-in after arriving at Guwahati Airport or the railway station.
Guwahati is the gateway to the North-east of India. Located on the banks of the River Brahmaputra, it is the largest metropolis of the region.
After settling in your hotel, you will take a short break and later indulge on a river cruise on the Brahmaputra River, followed by a sumptuous dinner at night. You will stay the night at your Guwahati hotel.
Day 2:
In the morning, after having your breakfast, you will be travelling to Shillong for 4hrs (100kms).
‘The Scotland of the East’ or Shillong is the capital city of Meghalaya with amazing sights and landscapes. The place is also complimented by cool weather, jovial people, and culture.
On the way to Shillong, you will stop to pay a visit to the auspicious Kamakhya Temple and proceed towards your destination. In Shillong, check-in to the hotel and spend the rest of your day at leisure, followed by an overnight stay at Shillong.
Day 3:
The next day you will start by exploring the natural beauty and sightseeing around Shillong. You will be visiting the Wards Lake and Botanical Garden, Shillong peak, Shillong Golf Course, Butterfly Museum, Elephant Falls, and the Don Bosco Center for getting to know a bit about the indigenous culture of the people of Meghalaya. Later in the evening, you will come back to your hotel for an overnight stay at Shillong.
Day 4:
The next morning you will be on your way to the next destination, which is Cherrapunji via Mawsynram (3hrs, 60kms). This drive will be one of your once in a lifetime experiences. You will check-in to the hotel and stay overnight in Cherrapunji.
Cherrapunji or Sohra is well-known as ‘the wettest place on Earth.’ Located in the state of Meghalaya, the place has a mesmerizing natural beauty enhanced by waterfalls, lakes, caves, and misty valleys.
Day 5:
Your day starts with paying a visit to some of the unique attractions near Cherrapunji, such as the Mwallynnong Village, which is well known as the ‘cleanest village in Asia’, followed by the visit to the Live Root Bridge. The bridge is a fascinating man-made creation as it is made out of actual roots from trees and takes about 15years to be formed. The Root Bridge is located deep inside the Meghalaya forest, and its looks fill you with fantasy and adventure. The trip will continue with the visit to the Dawki border, i.e., the Indo-Bangladesh Border and later a visit to the famous Transparent Dawki River or Umngot River. It is one of the most magical looking transparent rivers where you can see the river-bed through the clear water. In the evening, you will get back to the hotel for an overnight stay at Cherrapunji.
Day 6:
Today you will be travelling to the wildlife sanctuary of Pobitora, which is a 6 Hrs (164kms) drive from Cherrapunjee. The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Assam and has the highest population of one-horned rhinos in the world. The sanctuary also has a diverse collection of different bird species and other wild animals.
You will spend the night at a hotel in Pobitora.
Day 7:
The next day you will indulge in the wildlife safari to the Pobitora sanctuary. After the jungle safari, you will be heading towards Guwahati, and on the way, make a stop to visit the auspicious Vasistha temple.
With the 7th day, your beautiful journey will come to an end. You will be on your way to the airport or the railway station to head back to your abode with wonderful memories of the trip.
